As I've previously blogged about, fitness is becoming more and more popular each year, and with the rise of sites like youtube providing thousands of fitness channels, the trend is becoming more and more accessible to everyone. I recently gave up my job to concentrate on university, so i therefore don't have much money to join a gym or go to classes. I like to run a lot but my all time favourite exercise to do is Yoga, and I've recently discovered a free Yoga channel that has made such a big impact on my life in a really positive way.
Yoga with Adrienne is a free yoga
channel available on youtube, ran by Adriene Mishler from Austin, Texas, who describes Yoga as 'The art of waking up' and i can completely see where she's coming from. Since starting my yoga practise, I've noticed that i feel much more energised, especially when i do it in the morning. I find it a release for me, whenever I'm stressed or sad or down, this is a place i can go to slow down, relax and b r e a t h e. I love how Adrienne makes yoga fun and free, and you don't feel like you have to strive for perfection, just happiness. I used to be a dancer so have always been fairly flexible, but in recent years I started to lose a bit of that flexibility so it's been great to start growing it again. Here are some of my favourite videos from the channel.
BEDTIME YOGA
This is a great one for when you've had a long day and are in desperate need for a good nights sleep. It's a very slow pace, and theres loads of gentle stretches that are really good for relieving stress. I always do this in my pyjamas after brushing my teeth so that I'm ready to get into bed straight away, and i always sleep like a baby after doing this.
SIX PACK ABS
Everybody wants to work their abs, but i really love this one because you get a really good ab workout without feeling like you're going at 100mph and pushing yourself too much. This video teaches you to slow down, which can actually work your abs more than doing it really fast. The moves that are in this video allow you to build strong, functional abs by using the back of your body as well as the front. And it's only 15 minutes long!
TRAVEL YOGA-MORNING SEQUENCE
I try and do this workout at least three times a week in the morning before getting ready for uni. It's only ten minutes long which makes it brilliant for when you need something to wake the body up and get you ready for the day ahead. Its a really active flow and allows you to wake the body up gradually. One of the reasons why this is one of my favourites is because the location where it's shot is beautiful, and such a nice thing to look at in the morning when you're still half asleep.
YOGA FOR HEALING AND MEDITATION
This one was a bit of a challenge for me at first, as it is a very slow and mindful sequence, which is a challenge when I'm used to running and doing more cardio or toning based workouts. Probably the most important factor in yoga is the breath and this workout really focuses on that. After doing this workout a few times i absolutely love it, it's so good after a long day to do this as it really opens up the hips and lets you chill out a bit, but you still feel like you've done a workout after.
YOGA FOR HANGOVERS
That's right, there's even a yoga video for hangovers. I discovered this last week after a night out drinking way too much alcohol and feeling awful. If I'm honest, the last thing i wanted to do is exercise but i didn't want to miss out on my daily yoga sequence so was really happy when i stumbled across this video. I found it really rejuvenating and my headache was completely gone after doing it.
I'm really happy with the progress I've made since joining the channel. Yoga isn't the only exercise i do but since starting it, I've benefited in all my other areas of exercise too. Since starting my practise I've grown so much in strength and flexibility. I can do the splits once again, i've nearly conquered the crow pose and I'm learning to do a headstand (that's a hard one)
I'd definitely recommend Yoga with Adrienne, it's free so you might as well give it a try. You won't regret it.
