THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING:COSTUME

By 04:27

After hearing so much praise and rave reviews about The Theory of Everything, i decided i had to go and see it, and i'm so glad i made that decision. The film is without a doubt one of the best i've seen, and the portrayal of Steven and Jane Hawking by Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones is an outstanding one that i won't be able to forget for a while. As a fashion student, i was of course looking at the clothing, and with the film spanning over four decades from 1963-1993, it was so interesting to see how the costume designer portrayed these eras through the use of clothing and styling, especially when it came to Felicity Jones' costumes.

I love how as the film progresses, the costumes change to suit the situation. At the beginning of the film when Steven and Jane first meet, Jane is wearing a lot of light colours such as mint blues and greens. However, as Stevens condition deteriorates, the costume designer (Steven Noble) dressed the character in darker clothing, with heavier materials that could perhaps represent how exhausted Jane was at the time. Towards the end (spoiler alert) when Jane marries Johnathon, we see her once again return to a much lighter palette.
