HEALTH CRAZES FOR 2015

By 09:51

As we all know, healthy eating and exercise is becoming increasingly important in today's society, and the awareness for it's benefits has seen a rapid growth over the past few years. In 2014, kale, juicing, and the 5:2 diet were massive trends and the sale of health cookbooks more than doubled. But 'healthy eating' doesn't have to just mean salads. Here's some experts giving their predictions on the healthy stuff we'll be eating (and doing) in 2015.

BONE BROTH

Who says so? Jasmine and Melissa Hemsley, health food cooks and consultants to the stars. Click here for their website.

What is it? It's a stock-like broth that is generally made from bones (sounds gross I know) and it can sometimes contain a small amount of meat. It makes a great basis for soups, stews and sauces.

What are the benefits? It's packed with minerals and collagen, meaning it's great for the skin and hair (and cellulite) and it's got loads of healthy fats. It's also affordable and sustainable, and doesn't take long to make.

WE'LL BE SPIRALIZING

Who says so? Another prediction of Jasmine and Melissa Hemsley.

What is it? Spiralizing is the art of turning fruits and vegetables into noodles. You need a spiralizer to do it, and it's available from most kitchenware stores.

What are the benefits? Spiralized pasta is gluten free, pale, vegan and vegetarian friendly, low carb and an altogether cleaner and more wholesome way to eat. A spiralizer are generally quite inexpensive and there's a range of vegetables or fruits you can use to do it- making the list of healthy recipes endless.

NUT BASED VEGAN CHEESE

Who says so? Everydayhealth.com

What is it? Nut based cheeses are made from alternative milks like almond and macadamia nut milks but are prepared in typical cheesemaking style. Great for vegans but traditional cheese lovers are expected to love them as well.

What are the benefits? Depending on the type of milk and preparation used, vegan cheese has several benefits such as a boost in vitamins E and B12 from almond milk.

COCONUT FLOUR

What is it? We've seen the popularity of coconut water and milk soar in 2014 but it seems that this year, coconut flour will be used to add flavour to baked goods such as cakes and brownies.

What are the benefits? Coconut flour packs 5 grams of fibre per 2 tablespoons (only 2 of those grams contain any total and saturated fat) and it's gluten free. Its also great for people with diabetes too, as it lowers the glycemic index- a measure of the rate that a food increases blood sugar.

WE'LL BE DOING...

HOT YOGA

Who says so? Susan Hart, a nutrition coach since 2002 (via the BBC)

What is it? Hot yoga (whether it's Hatha, Bikram or Moksha) is an exercise where yoga classes are taught in temperatures of around 40c. The idea is that the heat warms your muscles up quickly and effectively so you can go into deeper stretches.

What are the benefits? The benefit that is spoken about most often is detoxification- the heavy sweating caused by the high temperatures is said to help flush toxins from the skin. The heat also allows you to stay in postures for longer. It's great for people looking for a more intense workout, and is key to developing strength, flexibility and tone. It helps conditions like asthma and focuses the mind, helping us to achieve better mental concentration.

POLE DANCING

Who says so? Susan Hart (via the BBC)

What is it? Pretty self-explanatory.

What are the benefits? The different postures you do around the pole means you need great core strength, and this exercise can really benefit your abdominal muscles as well as improve your confidence. It also seems really fun and it's something I'd love to take up.

In the spirit of healthy eating, I thought i'd share with you a salad i made yesterday for dinner. It was made up of fillet ofsalmon with a fajita glaze on lettuce leaves with avocado, carrot, cucumber, peppers, warm sweet potato, mango and pomegranate. It was absolutely gorgeous and was really healthy and filling.
