EVOULOTION OF THE SELFIE

By 03:48

I think that I can admit that most people, including myself, are prone to taking a quick snap of ourselves when our eyeliner flicks look good that day, or hashtagging an #ootd in your new Zara jeans for the rest of your instagram followers to see. The trend of the 'selfie' is one that has snowballed in the last two years, and has now become so accepted in the social media community that the term has even been added to the dictionary.

All kinds of people, from children to celebrities are taking advantage of the smartphone cameras and free photo editing apps that allow you to perfect your selfies even further by adding filters, and upload it straight to your social media apps for all your followers to see what you're up to.

To test the theory, I typed the hashtag #selfie into instagram, and over 228,568,036 selfies had been uploaded, with the feed being updated every few seconds.

Here, taken from the Huffington Post is an evolution chart of the selfie trend. We can see by this that the year 2013 is the year that the selfie went mainstream.

Celebrities also love a selfie, with the likes of Ariana Grande, Nikki Minaj, Jessie J, Ed Sheerhan, Taylor Swift, Zooey Deschanel and Miranda Kerr being just a few to get in on the act.

With so many digital platforms on which to share our snaps, it's no wonder that 'selfie' trend is one that is not only accepted, but expected in the world of social media. Even though this trend only began a few years ago, something tells me that the 'Age of the selfie' is here to stay.
