COUTURE TRENDS: HAIR
During Paris Couture week we saw the start of many different trends make their way down the runway in the form of clothing, but one thing that I always seem to forget to focus on as well is beauty trends. This blog post will be looking at various hairstyle's that we saw at couture week, from stylish ponytails to sleek comb-overs, and the styles I think will stick for Spring/Summer.
DE-TAIL IN THE PONY
From left to right- Armarni Prive, Christian Dior, La Perla, Giambattista Valli
The classic low ponytail was reinvented in the most stylish of ways at Couture week. We saw numerous black strings wrapped around the length of the ponytail at Armarni, metallic and coloured hoops tied through pieces of hair extension at Dior, and simple black headbands placed over the head at Giambattista Valli for a sporty look. My favourite is La Perla's french plait at the top of the head, with the hair being left loose from the nape of the neck to the ends, for a relaxed feminine feel.
THE GLAMOUR SWEEP
From left to right- Elie Saab, Alexandre Vauthier, Zuhair Murad, Dice Kayek
The classic, glossy Hollywood side sweep was a popular style at Couture week, with Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad combing the hair away from the face to show off the makeup, with the likes of Alexandre Vauthier and Dice Kayek opting to brush the hair forward to frame the face. Soft curls and waves with a shiny finish were left to fall over the shoulders for a natural yet glamorous look. Any of these hairstyles would be easy to do and look great for the summer, but my favourite is Zuhair Marad, with the slightly more defined curls and side shoulder sweep.
ONE DIRECTION
From left to right, Alexis Mabille, On Aura Tout vu, Frank Sorbier
Amongst all the sleek and subtle styles on the runway, there were some designers who decided to go Avant-Garde with their creations. At Alexis Mabille we saw the gelling of baby hairs to the forehead, reminiscent of the 20's flapper style, while On Aura Tout Vu painted glitter and silver studs along the side of the head. Another style was the addition of fine strands of colour, cascading down a high pony tail in feather form a la Alexis Mabille, or standing on end in a dramatic fashion at Frank Sorbier. The style I'm most looking forward to trying is Alexis Mabille's high pony tail and feather creation.
FANCY FLORAL
From left to right- Laurence Xu, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino, Chanel, Frank Sorbier
Florals were a big hit at fashion week, with floral garlands and fresh flowers decorating hairstyles for a romantic look. Laurence Xu models sported giant blue flowers, while Valentino opted for a more gentle, romantic look with fresh flowers placed in a halo braid around the head to offset the medieval theme. This look can be complex to create but Chanel used a simple sequined flower at the end of a plait which would be an easy style to start out with.
SMOOTH SLEEK AND SHINY
From left to right- Tony Ward, Yiqing Yin, Jean Paul Gaultier, Bouchra Jarrar, Frank Sorbier
This look is super sleek with a high shine finish. At Yiqing Yin and Frank Sorbier, models hair was swept around the head in one direction, creating a cone shape for a directional look. At Bouchra Jarrar, hair was smoothed into a low bun at the nape of the neck, a simple and stylish look that wouldn't be too hard to create, and would get the hair off the face for those (hopefully) hot summer months. The key thing to remember with this style is the hair must be flattened to the head with every single strand kept in place.
